Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I always remember how special my Mom used to make my sisters and I feel when filling little baskets of sweet candy and trinkets.

In today’s world of “classroom Valentine’s Day where each child receives between 25+ cards and candy treats, it can be helpful to think of some thoughtful gifts that don’t contain sugar!

I’ve always loved reading to my girls and they get extremely excited to receive new books – especially as we prepare for an upcoming event of holiday,

Here are some sweet Valentine’s Day books for kids that make great candy alternative gift ideas for youngsters.

In My Heart, A Book of Feelings

This is a great book for toddlers and helps teach them how to deal with and communicate their larger than life emotions.

Love From the Crayons

This is a wonderful Valentine’s Day book for kids. Not only is it a New York Times bestseller, but it features all the cute crayons from one of my favorite books, The Day The Crayons Quit

This Is Not a Valentine

This sweet book is great for preschoolers through grade school ages and focuses on how precious and unique relationships are.

I Love You, Stinky Face

Great for toddlers and preschoolers, this adorable book teaches great lessons about a Mother’s love regardless of how silly or stinky their little ones are. It’s also quite funny and easy to make up voices for each of the characters if you are feeling adventurous or had a little too much Chardonnay.

Guess How Much I Love You

Another great Valentine’s Day books for kids from babies to preschoolers. This is a wonderful book to keep on the shelf into March and April.

Maddi’s Fridge

Not a traditional Valentine’s Day book, but a book about love nonetheless. We bought this for my 5-year old for Christmas and it really opened her eyes to the different lives people have and showed that true friendship can conquer any material difference.

The Day It Rained Hearts

One of the tried and true Valentine’s Day books for kids, The Day it Rained Hearts
